Dr María Martínez from Instituto Bernabeu in Elche stresses the importance of prevention at a conference on breast cancer.

Dr María Martínez, medical coordinator of Instituto Bernabeu in Elche, participated in a specialized conference on gynaecological cancer, held on November 14th at the EUIPO facilities in Alicante. The event, organized by the SOLCIR association, brought together experts in the field, including representatives from the European Institute of Oncology and the Alicante Provincial Association of Women with Breast Cancer (APAMM).

In her speech, Dr Martínez focused her presentation on the importance of breast cancer prevention, stressing the importance of regular mammograms from the age of 45 onwards. In this regard, she recommended performing this examination at least every two years, highlighting its fundamental role in the early detection of possible anomalies.

She also emphasised the importance of pap smear and human papillomavirus (HPV) screening, urging women to have this test every three years as an integral part of their routine gynaecological care: “A pap smear every three years is a practice that not only contributes to the early detection of potential problems, but is also essential to maintaining a woman’s reproductive health,” she said.

On the other hand, Dr María Martínez discussed oocyte preservation, which offers women the possibility of preserving eggs before undergoing therapies that may affect fertility. “For women diagnosed with cancer, oocyte preservation is presented as a key option, giving patients the opportunity to plan their reproductive future even in the course of cancer treatments”. Ovarian preservation offers the possibility of preserving oocytes before undergoing therapies that may affect fertility.

These measures, according to Dr Martínez, are crucial for the early detection and timely treatment of possible cases of breast cancer. “Prevention is key in the fight against breast cancer and other types of gynaecological cancers. Regular mammograms are an indispensable tool to detect possible abnormalities at an early stage which significantly increases the chances of successful treatments”, said Dr Martínez.
