A study by Instituto Bernabeu reveals that double ovarian stimulation offers better results and accelerates the oocyte recovery process in fertility treatments.

The specialised journal “Pharmacogenetics and Genomics” has published a study by Instituto Bernabeu, headed by Mónica Hortal, biotechnologist at Instituto Bernabeu Biotech, which addresses the current problem of patients with low ovarian reserve who sometimes require oocyte donation to conceive, often related to the patient’s advanced age and the limited performance of ovarian stimulation.

This study aims to improve the ovarian stimulation performance. To this end, it has been studied whether the FSH receptor genotype at position 680 influences the results of ovarian stimulation in luteal phase. “Although previous studies have explored this genotype behaviour in the follicular phase, this study aims to find out whether personalisation of treatment in luteal phase could also be beneficial”, explains Hortal.

The ovarian stimulation limited performance has led to explore different approaches such as performing two ovarian stimulations in the same cycle, one in follicular phase and the other in luteal phase, as well as the application of pharmacogenetics. The results reveal that the dual ovarian stimulation strategy is a promising option, as all patients, regardless of genotype, show better results in terms of retrieved oocytes, mature oocytes and fertilised oocytes during luteal phase ovarian stimulation. “These findings suggest that the implementation of this strategy may offer significant benefits to patients with low ovarian reserve by improving treatment performance and accelerating the oocyte retrieval process,” she said.

Although previous research has been conducted at Instituto Bernabeu on FSH receptor genotyping and dual ovarian stimulation, this study stands out because it integrates previous knowledge in both areas, proving a more complete picture of the strategy’s efficacy in different genetic contexts.
