Towards a Positive Embryo Transfer
At first glance, the embryo transfer seems to be the quickest and simplest step in the In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) process. However, it is actually the most critical step in the entire treatment. Successfully overcoming previous hurdles means nothing if the embryo transfer is not done well. This happens if too much time lapses between when the embryo is taken out of the incubator and when it is placed back in the uterus.
Of course it also takes dexterity, skill, and experience to perform a good embryo transfer. Close attention should be paid to the environment in which the transfer is carried out.
At Instituto Bernabeu all embryo transfers are performed in a clean room equipped with an air filter that creates a flow of positive pressure, blocking the outside air from coming in.
Temperature and humidity are also strictly controlled, and overhead lights are turned off during the procedure. It takes place in a theatre specifically designed for this purpose, right beside the IVF laboratory.
A closed circuit TV allows doctors and embryologists to communicate directly, avoiding wasting any time during this critical step.
The emotional state of the patient is no less important a player in this process. In order to achieve the best atmosphere, the patient’s partner is always allowed to enter. A flat screen TV plays nature scenes while the transfer is carried out.
We also offer additional relaxation techniques: massage and acupuncture, among others. All embryo transfers are performed by highly experienced physicians and embryologists.
