Does donating your eggs affect your fertility? We solve all your doubts.

Many women who are considering donating her eggs have one question: could it affect my ability to become a mother in the future? It is a reasonable concern, especially when we consider the need to stimulate the ovaries with hormone treatment before egg retrieval. However, this idea stems more from misconceptions and contradicts scientific data. In fact, egg donation has no effect on the donor’s fertility.

This statement is supported by studies such as the one published in Human Reproduction (Westerlund E. et al., 2014), which reviewed the long-term follow-up of egg donors and concluded that egg donation is not associated with a decrease in future fertility or an increase in reproductive complications for the donor.

Throughout her fertile life, a woman ovulates about 400 times, but her initial ovarian reserve contains several hundred thousand oocytes. In each natural cycle, dozens of them are lost, although only one matures and ovulates. In egg donation, some of those that would be lost naturally are simply ‘rescued’, without depleting the ovarian reserve.

Can I have children in the future after donating my eggs?

Yes. Many women who have been egg donors have subsequently had children without any problems. Donating eggs does not affect female fertility in any way. The process is completely safe from a medical point of view and does not interfere with your ability to become pregnant later on.

In our experience, it is common to find egg donors who have not yet become mothers when they begin the donation process, mainly due to their youth, but who have become mothers later on, and their fertility has been completely normal. If you are in good gynaecological health and your ovarian reserve is adequate, there is no reason why egg donation should interfere with your future fertility.

How does your egg donation help.

Your donation enables assisted reproduction treatments with a high success rate. Thanks to you, many women who cannot have children with their own eggs (due to age, low ovarian reserve, cancer treatments, etc.) can start a family. Your altruistic gesture has a real impact on the lives of those who need it most.

Many women ask if donating eggs hurts. Ovarian stimulation is carried out with medication and regular medical check-ups, and the eggs are extracted under sedation, without pain. The side effects of egg donation are usually mild and temporary (such as abdominal discomfort or bloating). In addition, we explain the possible risks in detail so that you can make a free, safe and well-informed decision.

If you are considering donating your eggs or have questions about the process, we are here to help. Remember: egg donation has no effect on the donor’s fertility, and you can continue with your life as normal.
