Dr Andrea Bernabeu discusses the impact of genital microbiome on the reproductive process.

Dr Andrea Bernabeu, medical co-director of Instituto Bernabeu, has participated as a speaker at the Controversies in Reproduction, Obstetrics and Gynaecology (CROG in Spanish) Congress, held at the La Fe Hospital in Valencia. In her lecture, Dr Bernabeu addressed the impact of the genital microbiome on women’s reproductive process.

Thanks to the genetic techniques of massive sequencing, it has been possible to analyse all the micro-organisms that share space with us, demonstrating they are key for our health correct balance,” explained the doctor, who gave her talk as part of a session dedicated to assisted reproduction and moderated by Professor José María Rubio Rubio, Head of Section of the Assisted Reproduction Unit at the Hospital Universitari i Politècnic La Fe in Valencia.

The doctor also stressed that “the microbiota of the female reproductive tract is essential for keeping healthy and preventing diseases related to the reproductive system and the women’s general health,” and noted that it brings important benefits for reproductive medicine patients. These include minimising embryo transfers, reducing the time to pregnancy, and reducing the rate of miscarriages unrelated to embryonic aneuploidy.
