Will my embryos also be abnormal in the next cycle? IB research for ESHRE, 2016.

The team at IB BIOTECH has carried out a comparative study on chromosomal abnormalities in embryos from a given couple over different cycles. The conclusions obtained in terms of genetics will be presented in ESHRE, the most important of all congresses for reproductive medicine specialists, and which is due to be held in Helsinki. The work is part of one of 8 research studies carried out in their entirety at Instituto Bernabeu and which have been accepted by the congress’ scientific committee.

Couples were selected from those who had undergone two CCS (embryo Comprehensive Chromosome Screening) cycles with no more than a year’s difference between them and in which both the stimulation protocols, number of eggs retrieved and embryos biopsied were pretty much identical in both cycles.

Despite the similarities in those areas mentioned, noticeable differences were obtained in aneuploidy rates between the first and second cycles. The research work, which means progress in terms of the information available on embryo aneuploidies (the cause, in many cases, of the failure of in vitro fertilisation – IVF – cycles with the mother’s or donor eggs), concludes that aneuploidy rates do not necessarily have to be the same from one cycle to the next because there is no connection between them.
