Gynaecological Check-up

It is essential to have a check-up once a year to look after your gynaecological health, prevent pathologies, treat them -if necessary-, and promote healthy habits that will improve your quality of life.

Rather than the usual tests, at Instituto Bernabéu we seek to provide our patients with comprehensive assistance and counselling. In addition to performing routine tests in accordance with the guidelines of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, we review our patients’ health history and counsel them individually about what needs to be done to prevent diseases and improve their gynaecological health.

In this way, depending on the patient’s age, health history, family and partnership situation, reproductive wishes, and so on, we adapt our approach and provide personal assistance.

Typically, a gynaecological exam involves:

  • A detailed interview with the patient.
  • A general examination, including blood pressure and weight measurement.
  • A specific gynaecological examination to determine the normality (or abnormality) of the external and internal genitalia.
  • A breast exam.
  • Collecting samples for subsequent analysis, prevention and control. For instance, cytology, HPV or sexually-transmitted disease testing.
  • A pelvic and/or abdominal ultrasound.
  • Requesting further tests, if necessary: mammographies, breast ultrasounds, hormone and general laboratory tests, and so on.
  • Consulting with other specialties: Endocrinology, Urology, Radiology, the Pregnancy Centre, the Genetic Counselling Centre, and so on.
  • Diagnosing normality or abnormality.
  • Identifying a treatment, if necessary.
  • Offering advice on prevention and healthy habits.

All these steps should not be performed mechanically but should be tailored to each case. To give some examples:

  • In women vaccinated against HPV (Human papillomavirus), the traditional strategy of scheduling an annual cytologymay need to be changed. It may be advisable to modify the frequency.
  • In women with a family history of Breast Cancer, it may be necessary to change the strategy of performing mammographic controls.
  • In childless women wishing to have children in the future, it may be necessary to counsel them on Ovarian Reserve and Age in order to devise an adequate plan for motherhood. This is something we are especially interested in. We wish to prevent the misinformation that patients sometimes have from turning into frustration for not becoming pregnant at an age where possibilities for treatment are more limited.
  • When a patient previously visited the Emergency Room for gynaecological reasons, it becomes necessary to find out what was done, as normally urgent pathologies are ruled out, but no comprehensive gynaecological exam is performed.

Furthermore, at Instituto Bernabéu, we believe that providing Personal Comprehensive Assistance adds value for those women who come to us: from performing something as simple as a cytology to removing polyps, to performing laparoscopic surgery on some myomas found during a gynaecological exam. All this is supervised by their trusted gynaecologist, it takes a short time and no delays or transfers between clinics are needed.

That is why we have specific centres for comprehensive assessment of patients on:

As can be seen, a gynaecological examination means something more than finding out “whether I have something bad or not”. It means planning how I am going to take care of my health and what I am going to do if I have a problem.
