Dr José Antonio Ortiz will coordinate the Congenital Defects Unit at Instituto Bernabeu

Dr José Antonio Ortiz, Instituto Bernabeu’s biochemist and molecular biologist, has just taken up the position of the clinic’s Congenital Defects Unit coordinator. His objective is to monitor pregnancies and the birth of children after IVF treatment and to provide advice in the event that any type of congenital defect is identified.

Prenatal diagnosis has evolved dramatically in recent times: high-resolution ultrasound scans and non-invasive prenatal diagnostic techniques using maternal blood are making possible to detect a greater number of birth defects. And advances in genetics and genomics are also helping to reduce the risk of disease transmission.

The Unit is made up of a multidisciplinary team comprising gynaecology, obstetrics, embryology and genetics composed of Instituto Bernabeu medical co-director, Dr Andrea Bernabeu; the Obstetrics department director, Dr Ana Palacios; and the of the egg donation department director and embryologist, Jaime Guerrero, and of course, Dr Ortiz.
