Fertility tests: 5 reasons to be tested

What is a fertility test?

Fertility tests consist of an assessment carried out by a gynaecologist specialised in fertility, with the aim of detecting possible problems and offering personalised advice. In this consultation, a detailed medical history is taken, a gynaecological examination is performed and the basic study is completed by estimating the ovarian reserve and analysing a sperm sample. The specialist may consider additional tests to be necessary based on these fertility tests, depending on the examination findings. Analysing all the information makes possible to give recommendations that may range from changing lifestyle habits to starting assisted reproduction treatment.

Reasons for fertility testing

There are many reasons for seeking fertility counselling. Among others:

Desire to postpone childbearing.

Searching for pregnancy for at least one year.

Searching for pregnancy for more than 6 months in patients with established risk factors

Being over 35 years old, irregular or absent periods, endometriosis, fallopian tube alterations, low ovarian reserve, seminal alterations…

Having suffered repeated miscarriages.

Having a family member with a known genetic disease.
