The research work, which was given the award by the Spanish Andrology Society (ASESA) during the Ángel Bayo Prize’s eighth edition, is entitled ‘Study of structural damage after sperm immobilisation prior to intracytoplasmic sperm injection in teratozoospermic males.’

Our Reproductive Biology and Medicine department obtained first prize for the best piece of original research work as published in the prestigious International Journal of Andrology. The prize was awarded by the Spanish Andrology Association (ASESA) during the celebration of the eighth edition of the Ángel Bayo Prizes which aim to stimulate and boost publication quality amongst members of ASESA and associated societies.

The research work awarded with the prize was carried out jointly by Dr Mª José Gómez from the University of Alicante’s Biotechnology department and Instituto Bernabeu’s Reproductive Biology and Medicine department with Dr Rafael Bernabeu, Medical Director of Instituto Bernabeu, Dr Jorge Ten and Jaime Guerrero as co-authors.

The aim of the study was to describe and compare ultrastructural damage which sperm immobilisation can cause prior to intracytoplasmic sperm micro-injection, as well as DNA damage and the state of sperm acrosomes in teratozoospermic and normozoospermic males.
