Classic IVF using donated ova improves embryo quality and increases the chances of pregnancy when compared with ICSI in IVF

Specialists from the Embryology Unit at Instituto Bernabeu will present research work entitled ‘Conventional IVF improves the results of an egg donation programme compared with the use of ICSI’ at the 9th edition of the Association for the Study of Reproduction Biology (ASEBIR) Congress to be held in Madrid between 15th and 17th November. The team led by Dr Jorge Ten, Director of the Unit, aimed to understand which assisted reproduction technique is more appropriate and efficient when using donated eggs, based on the premise that semen quality is also normal. Further to research, the experts have reached the conclusion that classic in vitro fertilisation (IVF) is a more suitable technique than using ICSI (introduction of the sperm using a microscopic cannula) to fertilise when working with donated eggs and normal sperm samples (normozoospermic).

The experts highlight the fact that conventional IVF is less aggressive and more natural for the oocyte. This gives rise to improved pregnancy rates when the ovum is donated and sperm is normal.
