Altered FISH in sperm, would Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) be indicated?

From Instituto Bernabeu, we advocate reproductive medicine tailored to the individual needs of each patient. Therefore, much of our team is exclusively or partially dedicated to research to find individualized solutions. Nine of these recent research projects have been accepted by the Scientific Committee of the ESHRE (European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology) for presentation at its annual meeting next month in Lisbon.

Approximately 20% of pregnancies result in miscarriage in the first quarter, and it is known that chromosomal abnormalities of the embryo are one of the main causes of failure in embryo implantation and miscarriages.
The aim of this study was to know if men with FISH in altered sperm were more likely to result in embryos with chromosomal abnormalities.

The data for the study was obtained from couples who decided to have genetic diagnosis of their embryos to increase their chance of pregnancy. We compared the results of those embryos which came from men with FISH in altered sperm with those who came from men with FISH in normal sperm.

The conclusion we drew is that those men with FISH in altered sperm are more likely to result in embryos with chromosomal abnormalities. Therefore, genetically diagnosing the embryos of these couples could reduce implantation failure and repeated miscarriages, so it is possible to increase the chances of getting a normal pregnancy.
