What tests do I need to have before egg donation treatment?

Egg donation has become an option for women who, for whatever reason, can no longer use their own ova. For example, due to poor ovarian reserve, poor oocyte quality and premature menopause.

The process is widely used in Spain. As well as exceeding organ
donations and transplants in number, we also have the largest number of egg
donors in Europe.

It […]

What is the impact of obesity on male fertility?

Obesity, when understood as a body mass index (BMI) in excess of 30kg/m2, is associated with numerous health issues including hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia and so on. It also affects fertility. In women, the impact of obesity is very clear. It generates hormonal abnormalities that have a direct impact on a woman’s ability to reproduce. As a result, obesity in women has been the subject of numerous studies and there are a large number of publications on the matter. […]

Can acupuncture have a positive impact on a cycle of in vitro fertilisation?

Acupuncture is a medical discipline with a history dating back several millenniums. For many years, attempts have been made to apply its therapeutic benefits to the field of sterility.
The results obtained to date have been contradictory. Whilst some groups have published improvements in the results obtained, others have not noted any differences at all. […]

i-Port: bidding farewell to injections during ovarian stimulation

At Instituto Bernabeu, we are bidding farewell to ovarian stimulation injections during courses of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment. The clinic is launching an innovative device called i-Port Advance™ for self-administration of drugs using a system that is already used by diabetics and which is being put to gynaecological use. By using this device, Instituto Bernabeu is revolutionising the future of assisted reproduction and making administration of injectable drugs easier. In short, it takes the stress out of having to have one, or sometimes more than one, daily injection. […]

The role of seminal fluid in improving fertility treatment

There are two parts to semen: spermatozoa and the seminal fluid that the spermatozoa use as their means of travel.
Seminal fluid has traditionally been attributed the role of a simple means of transportation. However, many years ago, it started to become clear that exposure to seminal fluid with no spermatozoa content improved in vitro fertilisation results and the results in couples experiencing recurrent pregnancy loss.
Increased proof of this improvement in results has emerged over the last few months, as indicated in the recent scientific publications referenced at the end of this post. These pieces of scientific work confirm early observations and explain the reasons why. […]

Can the immune system have an impact on implantation failure and recurrent pregnancy loss?

The immune system plays a very important role in the health of human beings, acting as a defence barrier against harmful organisms or substances.
Immunology is a very complex area when trying to get pregnant or as a pregnancy progresses and it involves an elevated number of cell types and molecules that need to work in a coordinated and balanced manner. […]

The dangers of being ill-informed in forums on fertility

The Internet, with its wide range of possibilities (webpages, forums, social media and so on), opens up an endless array of opportunities for obtaining information.
However, the participants are anonymous and forums often turn into a place to which negative messages can be sent. This is because satisfied patients are busy enjoying their delight at having achieved their goal and rarely go on-line to publicly share their innermost joy. […]

New examination aimed at testing couples with recurrent implantation failure

Instituto Bernabeu focusses on providing personalised solutions, particularly in cases of patients with a difficult reproductive prognosis (low ovarian reserve and recurrent implantation failure (RIF)).
Carrying out a number of empirical tests and treatments has, on occasions, been put forward as an option in the case of patients suffering from recurrent implantation failure. The latter have proven to be of questionable efficacy and the former have proven to be of limited or no use.
One of the proposed strategies for patients with recurrent implantation failure (RIF) that is providing many of these cases with solutions, is IVF (in vitro fertilisation) with elective freezing and biopsies on all embryos so that the frozen embryos can later be transferred during a natural cycle. In other words, without any hormone treatment.
It is possible to recreate the conditions under which transfer takes place during treatment of this kind by carrying out a mock cycle and evaluating a series of parameters that can influence transfer success. […]

A less invasive, simpler technique: SOFT IVF or MINI IVF

Having a sufficient number of mature egg cells is one of the key steps to obtaining excellent results in a cycle of in vitro fertilisation (IVF). In order to achieve this, the ovaries need to be stimulated and, contrary to what happens during a natural cycle, the ovaries need to simultaneously mature an appropriate number of eggs.
The most commonly used stimulation protocols are based on the use of doses of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). These may or may not be administered along with other drugs and vary between 150 and 300 IU/day. The response will be somewhere between 7 and 15 follicles. […]
