Relevance of reproductive counselling

Before seeking pregnancy, women generally plan their gestation and take nutritional supplements, such as folic acid, which is fundamental for the prevention of defects of the neural tube in the foetus.
For greater assurance that this stage will be happy and free from complications, it is important to undergo prior reproductive counselling. Furthermore, it is appropriate to consider the need for some kind of specific additional counselling, according to the characteristics of the case. […]

You can avoid passing hereditary diseases on to your children by taking the GCT (Genetic Compatibility Test)

Our Genetic Compatibility Test (GCT) based on next-generation DNA sequencing analyses over 600 diseases.
For a person with an hereditary disease, eliminating the chance of passing that disease on to their children becomes a desire as well as the very best gift they could give them. Sometimes, parents don’t even know they are carriers of a disease. A person with an hereditary disease will pass it on to his or her children. Sufferers carry a heavy weight upon their shoulders because they are aware that they will pass on health issues to their children and that this will have a negative impact on their quality of life or lead to premature death. In most cases, we are carriers of one recessive disease or another, but our health is not affected by it. However, there is the possibility that we might pass that disease on to our children. […]

Techniques for obtaining spermatozoa

There are currently many different solutions when spermatozoa are not present in ejaculate. Access to a trained urologist increases chances of achieving spermatozoa in greater quantities and with improved quality.
What is TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration)?
This is a question which many couples ask themselves as they turn to assisted reproduction treatment when the issue is an absence of spermatozoa in semen (azoospermia) with the aim of obtaining sperm. TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) is a technique used for obtaining spermatozoa by testicular puncture.
Modern-day urology means that spermatozoa can be obtained for use in assisted reproduction techniques using different means. Over the last 10 years, we have improved the chances of achieving good results whilst reducing the invasive nature of the process and improving the quality of samples obtained in cases in which this was not previously possible. Men who have undergone a vasectomy, cases in which the sperm duct is obstructed or patients with cystic fibrosis are common examples in which adequate spermatozoa may be obtained through a simple testicular puncture under local anaesthetic. Different types of biopsy are also prescribed in certain cases. The differences between them are as follows: […]

Selection of egg donors at Instituto Bernabeu

Currently, oocyte donation is probably the most demanded technique in fertility centers, mainly due to the increase of maternal age. Voluntary participation of donors is essential, but donors must be evaluated carefully in order to avoid unsatisfactory results (do not forget that the ultimate goal is the birth of a healthy child without prejudice to the donor or the recipient couple).
In a recent study carried out in our center and presented at the Congress of the British Fertility Society, the leading causes of rejection in our program were evaluated in 560 potential egg donors. […]
