Instituto Bernabeu takes 16 items of scientific research work to the Spanish Fertility Society congress

Instituto Bernabeu took a total of 16 pieces of research work to the 32nd edition of the Spanish Fertility Society (SEF) National Congress. This is a significant quantity of work and, at the group of reproductive medicine clinics, research is an intrinsic part of its activity that is also put into practice during day-to-day provision of healthcare.

Eleven of the lines of research were presented as oral communications over the course of the event held between 16th and 18th May in Madrid’s convention centre where experts in reproductive medicine met.

Amongst the work presented by the Instituto Bernabeu Group, the importance of the use of next generation sequencing techniques that can detect chromosomal abnormalities with a great deal of precision was highlighted. Another area of research discovered that patients with poor ovarian response have a different distribution in the follicle-stimulating hormone genotype. Poor ovarian response is one field in which Instituto Bernabeu is a leader both in research and in clinical application of its research and improvements.

The fact that the clinic has in-house genetics and molecular biology laboratories means that the Instituto Bernabeu group of clinics can carry out very wide-ranging and in-depth research work such as the success of in vitro fertilisation treatment (IVF) following analysis of mitochondrial DNA in blastocysts. The clinic also presented research in which embryo comprehensive chromosome screening (CCS) is essential.

Instituto Bernabeu also presented a further five items of research work as posters. These included ‘The impact of oocyte maturity and the fertilisation rate on cycles with donated oocytes’, ‘Poor reserve: is it worth giving it a go?’ and another piece of work on the aneuploidy blastocyst rate and mosaicism following random ovarian stimulation.

Scientific and social updates in the field of reproductive medicine are highlighted at the congress and Instituto Bernabeu was present at this edition in the event on personalisation of ovarian stimulation. He gave a presentation entitled ‘Progress of treatment: follitropin delta.’ The gynaecologist, who is an expert in poor ovarian reserve, also participated in the debate entitled ‘Genetics: the breakthrough of genetics in the field of reproductive medicine.’

Dr Jorge Ten, Director of the Embryology Unit at Instituto Bernabeu and expert in molecular biology, also participated in another round table debate at the congress dealing with invasive and non-invasive embryo selection.

Each year, the Instituto Bernabeu Group attends this leading national fertility congress. The clinic presents the most important aspects of its research work that help to improve this science and have a positive impact on patient well-being and personalisation of treatment.
