Since 2005, the Instituto Bernabeu has been organizing the Fórum Internacional Mujer y Sociedad (International Forum Woman and Society), which unites outstanding personalities and experts from different areas and subject matters which are important to women. It aims at creating a place where different voices and opinions can be raised in order to provoke discussions which help to find a solution and an answer to the problematic issues at a social and emotional level as well as to health problems women are confronted with in today’s society.
The Forum is organized by the Fundación Rafael Bernabeu Obra Social, the Chair of Reproductive Medicine of the University of Miguel Hernández in Alicante and the Instituto Bernabeu. It is subsidized by the Excelentísima Diputación of Alicante and the Spanish bank CAM, Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo, and operates as the gathering point for outstanding leaders and experts in Alicante who deal with the problems and issues women are concerned with in their society.
Each publication in the Forum creates room for discussion, for stating opinions towards current social and emotional issues and women’s health. Immigration, integration, dignity, human rights and also ecology and respect for our environment are the subjects of discussion that prompt international experts of these areas to unite in Alicante.
Between the 14th and the 16th of September the first publication of the Forum took place in Alicante. Articles about the following three subjects were published: Woman and Fertility, Women’s role in Today’s Society and Women and Social conflicts.
The second edition of the Forum was published the 16th and 17th of February 2007 discussing three main topics. Women and Maternity, which analyses how the current situation of our society acts like a brake towards the possibilities of women’s fertility and maternity. This part includes the title The violence towards women which reveals one of the most cruel facts of our society: social violence, violence in the family and the kind of violence where, with painful frequency, the woman plays the role of the protagonist. The third part is called Women and Social Conflicts. Faced with different social conflicts, women encounter themselves in especially vulnerable situations. Among others these include infectious and imported diseases as well as the changing way their role in society is represented by the media. The whole programme took place in the Aula de Cultura in the Spanish bank CAM in Alicante.
