It consists of a microscope test of the neck of the uterus by means of the method described by George Papanicolaou, that is why it is also known as “Pap test”.
Cervico-vaginal Cytology is still today the only method that has proved to achieve the reduction in the number of deaths due to cancer in the neck of the uterus. This test must be carried out when starting sexual relationships and with a regularity variable according to age and conditions.
The great value of the cervico-vaginal cytology is discovering premalignant or incipient malignant lesions produced by the Human Papiloma Virus infection. Complementing the cytology there are cellular biology tests to investigate the presence of the mentioned virus causing such lesions. It is indicated according to the age and/or the results of the cytology.
It consists of the attempt to detect alterations in the female genital apparatus which combines the vaginal tactus while palpating the abdomen. It is also known as bimanual exploration.
The ultrasound application has recently reached a great technical development in order to obtain images of the female inner genital apparatus that offer more discriminatory data that clinical exploration. It does not consist of radiations and it does not have secondary effects.
