The specific areas this department works with are:
Nowadays, more attention is being paid to nutritional and hormonal alterations regarding fertility. We mustn’t forget that fertility is regulated by the endocrine system.
In women, repetitive abortions or conception difficulty, are frequently motivated by endocrine system alterations like thyroid illnesses, diabetes, obesity and polycystic ovaries, among others.
Masculine fertility is also related to hormonal abnormalities (thyroid illnesses, diabetes, or lack of testosterone).
Our Endocrinology and Nutritional department offers the patient the possibility of a personalized treatment taking into account any special requirements needed in order to correct natural fertility before proceeding with any additional technique.
In our gynaecologic preventive check ups we include the treatment of any nutritional, metabolic and hormonal disorders that may happen in different life stages, especially crucial stages like menopause where more frequently, obesity, thyroid bone and other disorders appear. Our aim is to help you live a good quality life through these stages, preventing disorders like the ones mentioned above from happening, detecting them in their early stages and treating them when they have already appeared.
It is a fact that when a pregnant woman suffering from diabetes, thyroid, obesity and other endocrine illnesses, the maternal and foetus forecast can be in jeopardy due to the great risk of malformations and other associated complications. However, with a proper control and a specific treatment, the forecast might be improved, looking, in most cases, like a normal pregnancy forecast.
Our department offers the possibility of a pre-gestational assessment in our Pre-conception Clinic; there you can get a nutritional and endocrine assessment before and during pregnancy and after labour, , ensuring the best results for mother and baby.
"Every diabetic woman in the fertile age must plan pregnancies"
"A non controlled thyroidopathy in the periconceptional stage will result in spontaneous abortion and neurofoetal damage"
"Maternal obesity is associated to a badly done materno-foetal forecast: congenital malformations, macrosomy, etc, therefore solving this problem must be tried in the pre-conception stage".
"Every hormonal alteration suffers from failure to adjust during metabolic changes in a pregnancy and therefore this must be assessed and monitored in the preconceptional stage in order to avoid maternal and foetal complications".
On top of the correct follow up of all the pathologies above mentioned, there is an endocrinologic illness “genuine” of gestation. Gestational diabetes is a glucose metabolic alteration that is detected during gestation. It occurs to more or less 10% of all pregnant women.
This diagnose gets taken between gestation weeks 24-28 through the O’Sullivan’s Test. It is done to all pregnant women and the Glucose Tolerance Test if required.
In the first consultation, we confirm the diagnostic and at the same time a physical exploration gets done. We also offer a nutritional assessment and an exercise guide; we lend our patients a glucometer to auto-control capillary glycaemia and ketonuria. In the second visit, we assess insulinisation criteria (40% of women presenting Gestational Diabetes GD).
During the next revisions we will proceed to monitor and adjust the treatment, according to the level of metabolic control and gestational age. Subsequently, we will write a report for the time of labour and we will also give postnatal recommendations. Six weeks after birth, a blood test is necessary to assess any abnormal situation.
As well as women, men are advised to undergo an uroandrological and urological preventive follow up to prevent any arising complications. Here at our Institute we include the treatment for nutritional, metabolic and hormonal disorders that occur in different stages of life, keeping a closer eye on prostate carcinoma and the appearance of Late-Onset Hypogonadism (LOH), which is the equivalent to the menopause in women, also known as andropause, with similar consequences to the menopause and with a very efficient, hormonal treatment, to avoid future osteoporosis and to enhance sexual dysfunction among others. Our aim, for women as well as for men is to ensure a good life quality through this stage.
