Embryo adoption is a procedure where the patients decide to adopt embryos from other couples who themselves have undergone assisted reproduction treatments. Having been successful, these couples decide to donate their remaining embryos to other couples with reproductive issues. Please note that with embryo adoption similarity concerning physical characteristics, blood group and type is not always possible.
Prior to adoption, these embryos have undergone a process of embryo freezing. For this reason, the success rate is between 30-40%.
The benefit of embryo adoption is two-fold. Firstly, it allows couples on waiting lists and in long, cumbersome adoption proceedings to fulfil their dreams of becoming parents relatively quickly. Secondly, it allows the use of embryos which would otherwise remain frozen.
Due to the fact that there is no need for donor selection, nor the use of IVF techniques, embryo adoption represents an economical treatment option.
